For many people, tax time is the time to do big things. Sometimes this involves buying a new toy - who doesn't want a fishing boat or a new guitar? But just as often it is the perfect time to do critical maintenance on your car or your house.

Scheduling these more expensive maintenance items during tax time is a great way to deal with them, even if a trip might sound better - after all, if your tires wear out halfway through the trip, where will you be?

Consider how long the company has been in business, and ask about roadside hazard coverage - and ask exactly what it covers. Some stores offer this service, but the coverage is so limited it almost makes it meaningless. Make sure you know how often the tires need to be rotated; if you have a treadwear warranty, you will need to rotate the tires within the manufacturers specifications or the warranty will be voided.Aside from that, regularly rotating your tires greatly extends the life of the tire. Depending on how many miles you drive, a set of tires could easily last you 5 years or more IF you take care of them - the standard set by most tire companies is 3,000 miles.

The other great thing about tax time is that you will find really good deals on the more expensive tires, as well as some excellent financing opportunities. If you have a high performance car, or a desire for a new set of wheels and mud tires, this is the right time of year to buy! Not only are there good deals at the dealer, but many manufacturers also offer rebates this time of year - just ask your local tire store about any rebates; these are most often paid via a prepaid VISA card that is sent to you in the mail, but on some tire and wheel packages these manufacturer rebates can amount to a very nice discount.
